R. Rand Allingham Research Fund

As you likely have heard by now, our friend and colleague Rand Allingham recently passed away after fighting a fast-moving illness. Rand was an outstanding clinician, researcher, writer and teacher, and made many important contributions to the field of glaucoma. As you also probably know, one of his main passions was mentoring the next generation of clinicians and scientists. Indeed, it is perhaps through his many trainees that Rand’s impact on our field has been the greatest.

In recognition of Rand’s contribution to the field of ophthalmology and his outstanding mentorship of young faculty, the Duke Department of Ophthalmology and the Allingham family recently established The R. Rand Allingham, MD Research Fund. This is a permanent endowment to provide research support for early career faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology. It is our hope this endowment continues Rand’s legacy by supporting junior faculty at this key point in their careers. If enough funding is received to meet the amount required to create an assistant/associate termed professorship, it may then be used in that capacity.

Rand was strongly supportive of the establishment of such a Fund, and we view it as an important part of his professional legacy. If you have room in your annual giving plan, please join me in helping to secure this endowment in Rand’s honor. To make a gift or pledge go to https://www.gifts.duke.edu/dukeeye and select the R. Rand Allingham, MD Fund from the drop down menu.
